Silent March In Mumbai

Citizens of Mumbai including theatre and film personalities led a silent march at 5:30pm on December 29, 2012 from Juhu Beach Gandhi statue to Kaifi Azmi Park asking for Safety For India’s Daughters as a tribute to the deceased Delhi gang rape victim.

Shabana Azmi, who lead the march said, “We will not cry; we will not despair. We will remember because to forget will be the biggest betrayal. This is our wake-up call and we resolve to reflect and analyse how every segment of society is in part responsible for this misogynist mindset that regards women as objects. We demand a violence free society, accountability from the police and political class, firm investigation, fast track courts, speedy justice and certainty of conviction for the culprits”.

Apart from the actress, other film personalities like Hema Malini, Jaya Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, Genelia Dsouza, Shabana Azmi, Javed Akhtar, Om Puri ,Zoya Akhtar, Ranveer Singh, Dibakar Bannerji, Mahesh Bhatt, Kunal Kapoor, Shahana Goswami, Mandira Bedi, Satish Kaushik,Tannishtha Chatterji, Sandhya Mridul,Sonali Bendre Goldie Behl, Kalpana Lajmi,Tisca Chopra, Mita Vashisht, Soni Razdan, Sherlyn Chopra, Baba Azmi, Vinay Shukla also participated in the event.

Besides these, a host of people from the music industry like Ashok Shirley Singh, Sonu Nigam Alka Yagnik, Shaan, Lalit, Kailash Kher,Vishal Dadlani, Ehsaan, Prasoon Joshi, Ram and Sona Sampat from the music industry and theatre personalities like Sulabha Arya, Nadira Babbar, Makrand Deshpande, Ramesh Talwar, Jaswinder Singh, Shama Zaidi and Atul Tiwari too were seen as part of the group.

The celebs were accompanied by hundreds of citizens from the city who showed up on Saturday evening to lend their support to the cause.
